Style Cues from the Thin Man

I’ve seen a few other Thin Man movies with William Powell and Myrna Loy but for some reason had never actually seen the original 1934 The Thin Man film. This past Sunday while the snow fell outside and I tried not to think about html codes, I finally caught the classic. While I always enjoy the chemistry between the leading characters Nick and Nora, this time I was swept away with the clothing and the style of the 1930′s, especially this particular dress worn by Nora (Myrna Loy).

Look how beautiful the back is!

This striped, bias-cut dress with layers moved so wonderfully and looked so well-made that I couldn’t keep my eyes off of it. I missed some of the movie thinking about where to find a dress like that. This is the stuff my vintage-inspired dreams are made of. There’s something about this time period that I just love and am completely drawn to.

I’ve seen every Thin Man–I’m kind of obsessed and Myrna Loy isn’t remembered enough like other old hollywood glamazons. Her wardrobe in all those movies was so rich and decadent and that dress is such a stunner.

these movies are great! and you’re absolutely right about Myrna Loy, she gets lost amongst the other starlets but she’s absolutely wonderful … that dress = amazing

Alchemist, did you ever find out where to find dresses like this one pictured? Or the other stunning dress worn by Myrna Loy in the Thin Man (the dark one she wears in the dinner party scene when all of the suspects gathered at the end of the movie).

I own the Thin Man series on DVD but it’s on TCM right now and once again I am blown away by Myrna Loy’s charms. Her autobiography is one of the best Hollywood bios I’ve read. She was not only an incredibly talented actress but devoted the majority of her time away from the camera to Humanitarian causes such as the UN and UNESCO. A true admirable icon. And damn I want that dress!!!!
