Summer Nail Etiquette

June 4, 2012

Ladies, it’s that time of the year where we need to keep our nail game on point. What we could get away with during the cold, winter months only becomes more noticible once the days get longer and we start wearing less clothes. The gloves and boots are gone and we have nothing to hide behind – everything is on display and that means we have to step. it. up.

It’s time to say good-bye to those dry, ragged cuticles, chipped nail polish and embrace a summer of pretty digits. Rule #1: Please, please remember that people can see your feet when you wear open-toed sandals. I know this sounds pretty straight-forward, but trust me when I say I’ve seen many women wear shoes with toes that were not ready to see the light of day. Don’t be that girl. Rule #2: Lotion is your friend. Use it to keep your hands and feet moisturized.

No one is saying that you have to schedule weekly trips to the nail salon but you might have to invest a little bit of personal time to make sure that your fingers and toes look great all summer long. A great, cheap tip is to schedule a trip to the nail salon at the very beginning of the season, when you are just getting ready to wear sandals, etc. This leaves your nails looking manicured for a time and makes it easier for you to upkeep it in between visits. Regularly using cuticle oil, filing & buffing means that you can polish and re-polish a lot longer before having  to go back to the salon. Rule #3: Stay away from acetone-based polish removers – they have a tendency to make your nails brittle which leads to breakage.

I don’t what it is about the summer that makes us ladies want to wear the brightest colors imaginable on our nails. As a color enthusiast,  I usually have bright nails throughout the year but I am aware that there are some women who definitely feel that the hotter months are an invitation to have a color party on their fingers and toes. Rule #4: Do whatever you want with your nails – that includes painting them as bright as the sun or as dark as your goth heart will allow, throw in some nail art, keep them plain, whatever.

So, whether you decide that you want to be on trend with some lengthy claws or keep it classic with a french manicure during the summer – add a basic nail etiquette regime and keep your fingers and toes looking clean and well-kept.
