Okay, we’re almost finished with this month’s summer theme and we haven’t even talked about STYLE. If you’ve been a reader for awhile, then you know about the Cinema Aesthetic series which explores the importance of wardrobe and set design within a film, television series or music video. Usually, a Cinema Aesthetic post is dedicated to just one film but I thought it might be fun to do a round-up of the 10 closets to covet in movies set during the summer.
When you think about it, most of the films set primarily during the summertime are filled with the ubiquitous shorts, bathing suits, etc. But there are some films that are able to stand out fashionably against the summer season by upping it’s style quotient. Check out the list of 10 closets to covet and let us know what you think in the comments below.
{Rear Window} – Lisa (Grace Kelly). C’mon it’s Grace Kelly what do we expect? Perfect, classic 50’s silhouettes are everywhere. Tailored and demure, Lisa’s closet stands out against the grit, fear and suspense that surrounds the rest of the film.
{The Talented Mr. Ripley} – Everyone’s closet is to be envied. Set during a summer in the 1950s there’s so many beautifully tailored clothes which go perfectly with the incredible Italian riviera scenery. The men are dapper and the ladies are stylishly stunning.
{Stealing Beauty} – Lucy (Liv Tyler) is off to Italy for the summer and becomes completely consumed with the artistic bohemian lifestyle that she finds herself a part of. Easy sundresses, white canvas sneakers are just some of the pieces that feel like you would still wear them today.
{Vicky Cristina Barcelona} – Maria Elena is the tempestuous, free-spirit ex-wife with the bohemian style to match her personality. Long flowy dresses, wild bed-head hair, and that perfect hat makes us want to raid her closet.
{Almost Famous} – All the ladies, especially Penny Lane (Kate Hudson). Bohemian, rock-star fashions galore suitable for wild and carefree touring.
{The Slums of Beverly Hills} – Vivian (Natasha Lyonne) and Rita (Marisa Tomei) have the perfect 1970’s outfits for the summer. Rita being older has more style while Vivian, a struggling teenager, tries to figure out how to dress her new womanly body. Expect jean cut-off shorts, striped knee socks, halter tops and enough polyester to make your head spin.
{Dazed and Confused} – All the ladies. Even though set in the 1970’s, there’s a lot inspiration to be garnered here. Quirky looks, hippie/flower child moments and of course lots and lots of denim makes this covetable.
{The Wackness} – Stephanie (Olivia Thrilby) & Union (Mary-Kate Olsen) keep vintage hip-hop and urban, quirky style alive in this movie set during the summer of 1994. Think floral sundresses over white cropped t-shirts, bamboo earrings and twisted dreadlocks.
Now for your listening pleasure, here’s a quick playlist of one song off of each of the movies’ soundtracks. Enjoy!
