Kailey of Mermaidens Watercolor

If you’re an avid style blog reader, there’s a very good chance that you’ve seen the brightly hued, Disney Princess inspired style of Kailey of the popular Mermaidens blog. We got a chance to find out the inspiration behind her unique sense of style.

StyleAlchemy: Kailey, thanks so much for agreeing to do this interview. You’ve become quite known for your bubblegum, brightly colored outfits which you showcase regularly on Mermaidens. First and foremost, can you tell us about your trademark cotton candy colored hair and your blog name: Mermaidens?

Kailey: I had faded black hair for a while when I decided /I needed/ pink hair! Months, several boxes of bleach and pink dyes later, I have finally achieved the perfect hair for me!

I decided to get a blog way back in 2009 and registered the name “Mermaidens” – but only in 2011 did I start blogging “seriously” – sadly, I can’t even remember how I thought of the name! But it truly is perfect, as I adore mermaids!

SA: What led you to posting your outfits online?

K: Originally I really did not plan on sharing outfit posts, but after I saw so many of my favorite bloggers I knew I just had to try! Sharing my outfits has also helped me define my style and is a lot of fun to see how you have grown over the months.

SA: Your style is very unique and colorful, how has your personal aesthetic evolved? How would you describe it? Do you think you have a signature style?

K: I used to just wear jeans and tees for a long time because I thought anything super pretty and fancy would be out of my reach, but after discovering the DIY and thrifting community I realized how wrong I was! I would describe my style as playful, technicolor, fun. ♡ My signature style is usually something fluffy and pastel!

SA: What are your top three places to shop?

K: Thrift stores, ASOS, and Etsy!

SA: Who are your fashion icons, if any? What are some of your style influences?

K: A lot of cartoon characters have the most enviable style, and I get a lot of inspiration from fellow bloggers.

SA: What are the best thrift/vintage purchases you’ve ever made?

K: I am very fond of the Disney’s Cinderella vinyl I found; along with a royal blue pinafore.

SA: Do you have a favorite outfit, something that you’re really drawn to lately?

K: This outfit is one I am particularly fond of.♡

SA: Do you collect anything? Any hobbies, interests, etc?

K: I collect 90s toys and just about anything ice cream or cat related! I love to draw, watch movies, and… eat.

SA: What’s your favorite era for fashion?

K: I’m particularly fond of now, where it is acceptable to mix and match several different time periods into one look!

SA: What piece of clothing can you not live without?

K: Definitely tights and dresses!

SA: Being an avid thrifter, do you have a strategy when you go thrifting?

K: Try to look at E V E R Y T H I N G – usually they will have something that is absolutely perfect for you, but chances are you need to dig for it!

SA: Is there anything you would like to add?

K: Nope! Thank you so much for such fun questions! ♡
