I love looking through certain collections and seeing what inspires designers. For Alice Temperley’s A/W 2007 collection, she cites Paris in the early 1900′s with the arrival of Russian nobility, muses and Diaghilev’s Ballet Russes as inspiration. Which sounds so familiar, why is that? Then I realize that Jennine of The Coveted wrote about a documentary she saw on the Ballet Russes.

First fashion confession, I am not someone who has a lot of basics…which may not make that much sense. Aren’t basics the foundations of most wardrobes? Yes, which is why I’ve started to pay more attention to those building blocks. Sprinkled throughout my closet are what I call pieces, really beautiful, different items that I am drawn to. I have always been bored with the idea of regular collared shirts and black pants, what I saw in stores. There are a lot of people who have many different white buttoned shirts, I’m lucky if I can find one. I need to evolve my look and I’ve recently purged a lot of my closet and the only things that are still there are those pieces.

Which is why I like Phillip Lim’s A/W07 collection, it looks like really nice basics (shapes and items) that I would want to wear and that I can easily incorporate with my style. I’m on the hunt for similar items.

A great pair of structured wide-leg pants.

Do you guys find that you have more basics or pieces in your closet? Or perhaps you already have a great balance?

The Rolling Stones are one of my favorite bands, definitely classic rock at its best.
Rolling Stones
In December of 1969, the Rolling Stones helped to organize a free concert at Altamont Freeway in California, where they also perfomed at. It was noted that there was a sense of unrest hovering above the crowd. The Hell’s Angels had agreed to do security and what was supposed to be a great event turned into something tragic with the death of several people, including the stabbing of a young man right by the stage.

This picture is said to be of Jagger witnessing the event unfolding.

For their A/W 2007 collection, Lover the Label draws inspiration from the freedom of the sixties and uses Altamont as a point of reference.

From their site, “Among the air of uneasiness the girls of Altamont intermixed; the flower children and the teen runaways, the biker girls and the hippie witches. They all came clutching flowers, hoping for a glimpse of Mick Jagger, instead they witnessed the end of innocence.”

I stumbled across this fantastic editorial photographed by Piero Landi, based from the UK. The vibrancy of the colors in this set are gorgeous and I’m drawn to the circusy, theatrical theme.

There was so much talent at Hyeres 2007, with all of the photographers and designers. Estelle Hanania photographed the fashion-story for the designers. She had won the photography competition at Hyeres the year before. Here are a few of my favorite shots, love the variety of designs and the natural, woodland theme.

I love Wunderkind’s A/W 2007 collection. There’s so much structure to most of the clothes but there is still fluidity in the movement. Everything feels slightly noir but with a modern edge.

The first Audrey Hepburn movie I ever saw was Sabrina. I knew that she was an actress in those “old” movies but never really sat down to watch her. It was the summer that I was twelve and my grandfather was sick in the hospital when this little black and white movie on t.v. provided a temporary distraction of the events swirling around me. Especially when she filled the screen with those Givenchy creations that to this day epitomize classic glamour. Another favorite old movie I love is Funny Face. Here is a short clip filled with Audrey goodness.

Every woman is a queen and as such should have a crown. I recommend this spectacular work of art by the milliner, Stephen Jones. This was used in the A/W 2005 Christian Dior Haute Couture show and I absolutely adored it the first time I saw it. I still think it is over the top and beautiful.

Jennine over at The Coveted wrote the nicest post about stylealchemy.

The Coveted

It took me completely by surprise and what I love is connecting with all different types of people with similar interests but diverse perspectives. She’s got a distinct sense of style and a great eye for fashion. Her blog has quickly become a favorite that I check and thanks to her for the shout-out and to all the new people that have checked out my little space on the net.

I love the clothes of Mociun. There is an urban casualness, an easyness that I like.

Once again, I can always find something in Vogue Nippon to inspire me. I like color, however, I am not a fan of wearing every color of the rainbow at the same time. Yet, this editorial seems to find the balance between fantasy and making it work. It’s definitely not something I would normally wear but there are elements that I can draw from.
