First things first, I’ve never been to summer camp. Correction, sleep-away camp. I’ve never been to sleep-away summer camp. As a child, when summertime rolled around, there were many day camps and summer programs in the city that I participated in – but actually going away for a couple of months was an experience I didn’t get to have. As, a result I have romanticized the idea of summer sleep-away camp – which is why Moonrise Kingdom and other summer camp themed movies appeals to me. However, I wouldn’t trade any of my experience of traipsing around NYC and living a urban summer life. Thank the weather heavens, summertime is H. E. R. E. here. Crop tops, short shorts, sandals are just some of the things that we’re itching to wear. It’s like our skin has been on lockdown for the past 6 months and we can’t wait to strip down and forgive me for quoting Sheryl Crow but: soak up the sun. Okay, let’s keep it real. We know that we’re supposed to use sunscreen and sunblock to protect our skin but in reality after the initial rubdown – how many of us continuously reapply? Exactly. And how many of us know the difference between sunblock and sunscreen? Remember when you were younger and it used to feel like all you ever had was time? Time to do everything, be everywhere. It seemed to take forever for those 365 days to pass – just so that you could celebrate your birthday once again. Time ticked by so slowly that you weren’t just 8 or just 9.
