July 1, 2012

Okay, we’ve made it through our inaugural theme of Summer and we’re taking the whole month of July to celebrate various acts of Independence and the necessity of Freedom. Almost everyone has to struggle with how to declare their own independence and what that means to them. When we are children, we have to listen to and adhere to what our parents/elders tell us but eventually we learn to discover the world for ourselves and decide how we want to live our life. There are so many examples of freedom and acts of independence for us to draw from. Here in the United States, the 4th of July is right around the corner, which signals the birth of our country as an independent nation free from the rule of England...

First things first, I’ve never been to summer camp. Correction, sleep-away camp. I’ve never been to sleep-away summer camp. As a child, when summertime rolled around, there were many day camps and summer programs in the city that I participated in – but actually going away for a couple of months was an experience I didn’t get to have. But my thoughts on working out are similar to Jenna Marbles who contemplates it for...

Lake Wenatchee…For one week that summer of 1971, my family and Paul Pfeiffer’s rented side-by-side cabins along its placid shores. And that’s how the beginning of the episode 70 titled “The Lake” of the t.v. series, “The Wonder Years” begins. To me, this episode perfectly captures the moment and that intense feeling of a summer crush that can quickly escalate into you having to spend every second of time together because you know its fleeting. As you watch Kevin Arnold struggle with this, you instantly remember what it felt like to be captivated by someone over your summer break.
